How can students with learning disabilities learn to read, write, listen, and speak in a second language? How can teachers set them up to succeed and to want to continue? This webinar looks at a spectrum of learners in a first-year German course, demonstrating course design and classroom instruction techniques that can accompany those same students into their second, third, and fourth years of German study.
Elizabeth Hamilton is Associate Professor of German at Oberlin College, where she currently chairs the Department of German Language and Literatures. The volume Worlds Apart? Disability and Foreign Language Learning (New Haven: Yale U P, 2007), which she co-edited with Tammy Berberi and Ian M. Sutherland, offers a road map to curriculum developers interested in inclusive language instruction in higher education. She has published several articles on teaching students with disabilities and also studies representations and changing definitions of disability in German literature and film.
